Whether you are moving because of a job change, or looking for a smaller home because the children have grown and moved out or keeping up a large house is becoming too expensive, there are things you can do to save a little cash, before you move.

Thinking smaller in terms of a home will mean you need to think about what to do with some of the items in your home that you do not want to take with you when you downsize to a smaller residence. Instead of putting everything out on the front lawn, hoping that someone, somewhere, will have use for it and take it off your hands, think about making a little extra cash with it, or donating it to a charity and save money in taxes. And maybe you don’t need to have the most expensive direct.tv package too.

Sell the excess

If, like many people today, you have a television or computer in every room of the house, moving to a smaller home with fewer rooms is a great time to consider selling some of those electronics online. You can also sell clothing, shoes, or jewelry you no longer wear that has been taking up space in crates in the garage or basement. Be sure they are in reasonably good condition.

Donate goods

Give away electronics, office supplies, and art supplies to a local school, church, or to police, fire, and veterans groups. Your donations will translate into savings on your taxes next year.

Another thing you can do to downsize, is to contact recycling centers to see what type of items they accept. This will not save you money, but it will help to save the environment.
